A world product for the world market
Very
tasty
They grow high in the Andes. Plants with
a floury root, similar to truffles and very tasty. ‘They
make a delicious dish, even for the Spanish’. Words
written by chronicler Diego de Almagro during a violent expedition
to Peru around 1536.
A versatile and valued nutritional source
The conquistadors introduced the potato
to Europe. The crop was only grown on a small scale from the
beginning of the 18th century. It was not very popular and
long considered food for the poor. However, this attitude
quickly changed. Thanks to breeding techniques and improved
cultivation methods the potato has developed into a versatile
and valued nutritional source.
A leading exportera leading exporter
There are currently some 250 varieties
grown in the Netherlands, of which about 160 varieties are
exported as seed potatoes. The Netherlands has evolved into
a leading exporter in this sector, supplying customers worldwide.
The Netherlands thanks its prominent position in potatoes
to its favourable geographic situation and weather, advanced
inspection services and obligatory quality inspections.
Potato varieties come and go, and lifecycles are becoming
increasingly shorter. Essential in the continuous search for
new, promising (monopoly) varieties is naturally healthy and
virus-free parent material.
De Nijs Potatoes
De Nijs Potatoes in Warmenhuizen occupies
an increasingly important role in the export of seed potatoes.
In 2006, the 50th anniversary will be celebrated of a company
that has grown from a family run company in Noord-Holland
into a major exporter with cultivation locations (pool contracts)
throughout the whole country.
Since exports were concentrated on in 1997, the quantum has
doubled. Currently 95% of the turnover is achieved by 40 to
50 potato varieties, including well-known cultivars such as
Spunta and Desiree. Exports are shifting from the neighbouring
countries to serving the entire world, with the emphasis on
North Africa and the Middle East. At the moment these warmer
regions account for more than 50% of the turnover. A number
that continues to grow!
As well as seed potatoes, de Nijs Potatoes' trading activities
also include importing and exporting consumer potatoes. Other
markets are also being investigated, such as exporting onions
and seeds. However, the major product remains seed potatoes.
This is the area of expertise in which de Nijs Potatoes has
excelled over the past fifty years. de Nijs is glad to share
its experience and know-how – in the form of excellent
parent material - with other potato growers in many countries.
